- Description
- Within a world characterised by rapid technological advances, innovation and a continuous crossing and transformation of disciplinary boundaries, creativity has become a valued commodity. There is, as Dacey and Lennon (1998: 3) note,'a growing complexity [...] in most aspects of human endeavor'; a condition which requires not only innovative and intelligent qualities but also imaginative contributions. As such, creativity-which is an integral part of investigative practice, supporting the search for new scientific or artistic insights-has become a formal learning goal of many higher education institutions. Whilst the growing emphasis on creativity has been relatively unproblematic for some academic fields, this has not been the case for design and architecture, disciplines that have typically embraced a more subjective and enculturated understanding of what creativity entails. However, this way oflooking at creativity; along with the venerated atelier and Beaux-Arts educational models that have been used to promote it, are often out of step with contemporary higher education institutions' expectations of transparent, accountable and objective assessment practices.
